THE TROUBLESOME CATERPILLAR.
It seems that we did some injustice to Mr W. M, Maskell when referring yesterday to that gentleman’s controversy with Sir Walter Buller. We were misled by incomplete information, which made it appear that Mr Maskell resented Sir Walter holding an independent opinion upon the composition of “the vegetable caterpillar.” This, we are now assured, was incorrect. What Mr Maskell objected to apparently with some reason —was the publica. tion of Sir Walter’s criticism of his paper upon this curious phenomenon in the “Transactions” of the Philosophical Institute in such a way that he was deprived of Lis right to a simultaneous reply. He maintains that this was a breach of etiquette which fully justified his recent refusal to engage in a scientific discussion with Sir Walter. We regret that our allusion to the matter should have left room for the inference that Mr Maskell was unable to tolerate any opposition to his own conclusions.
