UNIVERSITY SENATE.

The sittings of the Senate were continued yesterday, when there were present—Sir James Hector (chancellor), Rev J. C. Andrew (vice-chancellor), the Moat Rev the Primate, Sir R. Stout, his Honor the Chief Justice, Hons W, Rolleston and C. C. Bowen, Revs Dr Salmond and W. J. Habens, Professors J, M. Brown, F. Brown, Cook, Sale and Shand. Sir James Hector was re-elected chancellor and the Rev J. 0. Andrew vicechancellor for the ensuing year. The Recess Committee presented its annual report on the result of the last December examinations. The numbers of candidates were:—For matriculation 431, for medical preliminary 50, for junior scholarships 66, for solicitors’ or barristers’ general knowledge 23, for B. Mus. inter* mediate 5. The committee recommended that the junior scholarships for 1894 should be awarded to the following in order of merit;— W. P. Skey, Dunedin; G. E. Thompson, Dunedin; E. F. Johansen, Nelson; L. E. Williams, Dunedin; Flora Ross, Turakina; Linda Fenwick, Dunedin; Myra Eawson, Christchurch; J. Prendeville, Wellington; H. Stuckey, Nelson; Annie M’Pherson, Auckland; Annie Bauchop, Dunedin; Kate Scott, Christchurch; E. W. Allen, Auckland ; and Claire Smith, Auckland. The committee also recommended that of the remaining candidates for junior scholarship, 28 should be recorded as having «gained credit,” and 19 should be recorded as having qualified for matriculation; that of the 431 candidates for the matriculation examination 287 should be allowed to pass; that of the 23 candidates for solicitors or barristers’ general knowledge 10 should be allowed to pass; that of the 5 candidates for the B. Mus. examination in December 1 should be allowed to pass. The Senate went into committee to consider the matters referred to in the annual report of the Chancellor, and appointed a number of select committees, to which consideration of the various matters was referred. The afternoon session was devoted to further consideration of the Chancellor’s address.
