EPISCOPAL.

THE BISHOP OP WELLINGTON. CEREMONY OP CONSECRATION. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. Jan. 25. The ceremony of the consecration of Dr Wallis, the new Bishop of Wellington, took place this morning at Sc Paul’s Church. Admission was by ticket only, and the building was crowded. The choir was picked from those of the three principal Anglican Churches, and executed the choral portion of the service. At 10.30, a procession of bishops and clergy, numbering fifty-nine, entered the church. The former included the Bishops of Salisbury, Auckland, Wsiapu, Christchurch, Nelson, Dunedin, Melanesia, and tho Bishop-elect. Among ,the clergy were a number of the Native clergy. Bishop Julius conducted the communion service, and the Bishop of Salisbury preached the discourse. The latter was principally devoted to sketching the Christian ideal of a leader of the Church, with references to the Apostles and especially to St Paul. His Lordship warned his hearers and the candidate that tho besetting sin of the Anglo-Saxon race was devotion to material comfort. In New Zealand ho feared that, owing to its isolation and favourable condition of life, the propensity was likely to ba accentuated rather than diminished. The Bishop, therefore, must have something of the Christian warrior in him and be prepared to combat this tendency. He concluded by commending Dr Wallis to their prayers, saying that from what he knew of him personally ho believed ha would worthily •fill the post to which he had been chosen. The anthem was sung while Dr Wallis put on the rochet, and he was then presented to the Acting Primate and the authority for consecration was read by Mr Quick, Chancellor of the Diocese. The ceremony thereafter followed the ritual proscribed for such occasions, with full choral effects, the final act being the laying on of hands by all the Bishops present. The service lasted till one o’clock. The installation' service was held at St Paul’s Pro-cathedial to-night, when the new Bishop preached the sermon, in the course of. which lie urged that a commemoration service in remembrance of those who had‘rendered such valuable ssrvices in the past in New Zealand should be held each year on St Paul’s Day. The church was crowded to excess, and the congregation included all tho bishops and moat of the clergy present at the consecration service in the morning. The newlyconsecrated Bishop is to be accorded a public welcome ,at a social gathering, in the drillshed, to-morrow evening, when the Bishops of Wellington, Salisbury, Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch and Melanesia and other prelates will deliver addresses.
