WORK AND WAGES.
[Special to Press Association,] SYDNEY, Jan. 19. The annual conference of the Seamen’s Union of Australasia begins on Monday. Among the questions to be discussed are the International Federation of Unions, the establishment of headquarters of the lutercolonial Federated Union in Sydney, the inducement of shipping companies to adopt a uniform rate of pay for seamen, and to equip vessels in a better way in the interests of the crews. [Pee Pebss Association. I WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. The annual meeting of the Typographical Society was held last\night. Tho report showed the society to be in a sound condition, and it was decided to register under the Industrial Arbitration g»nd Conciliation Act. The balance-sheet showed tho receipts, including £137 brought forward, to be £274, and the expenditure -£B4, leaving a credit balance of £l9O. Nothing of importance was transacted at the meeting. CANTERBURY TYPOGRAPHICAL ' 'ASSOCIATION. A special general meeting of the Typographical Association wae held on Saturday evening, at the Foresters’ Mall, Oxford Terrace. The President (Mr W. Cullen) occupied the chair. The following resolution was unanimously adopted:—“ That the Board bo authorised to take all necessary steps to register tho Association under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1894,” The annual meeting then took place, the President ia the chair. The report and balanca-sheob as submitted by the retiring Board were unanimously adopted. Amongst other < matters of interest to the trade, the report stated that an amicable settlement of the long-standing dispute between the ’Association and Messrs Whitcombo and Tombs had been arrived at, and that the latter were now working in full accord with the Association. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr W. A. Williams; vice-president, Mr F. Row; hon treasurer, Mr A. T. W. Brad well (re-elected) ; secretary, Mr F. G. Gerard (re-elected); Board members, Messrs J. Henderson, D. Lumsden and W. M’Namara; auditors, Messrs R. P. D. Maurice and J. Wheatley; Trade and Labour Council delegates, Messrs E. Saudford and D. Edmunds. The report of the committee on old-age pensions was read and ordered to be printed for distribution to members, and a special meeting 1 called to consider it on Saturday, Feb. 16. The. revised rules were considered and adopted. A unanimous vote of thanks to the retiring officers brought the meeting to a close.
There is likely, to be trouble, a contemporary, says, over harvest in the Gore district. At a meeting of tho Farmers’Club there it was resolved’ to reduce the wages for harvesting from 9i to 8d per hour. The local harvesters are determined to resist tho reduction, and the Workers’ Union is taking stops to . prevent other labour flooding the district.
