ROAD BOARDS.

MANDBVILLE AND EANGIORA. The monthly meeting was held on Oct. 32; present—Mr G. Wallace (chairman) and all the members. It was decided to form the portion of the road, not river-bed, through the old racecourse, the formation to be half a chain wide. Messrs Ballantine and Just’s tender of £8 17s Od for repairs to the Oust bridge, was accepted. It was decided to pay the unemployed their wages at once and place the money received from the Charitable Aid Board to the Board’s account. Permission was granted Mr A. Bagnall to erect a but in the Fernside gravelpifc. It was decided to legally authorise Mr E. Unwin, ranger, to impound all stock straying or herded on the roads, but not to allow him driving fees. It was decided to sue owners of unregistered dogs after Oct. 23. Permission was granted Messrs H. Gibbs and G. Gibbs, under certain conditions, to fence in the unused portion of roads opposite their properties. It was decided to call tenders for grubbing gorsa on the Fernside and racecourse ground reserve to provide work for the unemployed. A circular regarding the method of valuing the district for taxation purposes was received. On the motion of Mr H. F. Gray, seconded by Mr M’lntyro, the following resolution was passed:—“That having regard to the unequal and unsatisfactory manner in which the tax assessments have hitherto bean made, this Board is of opinion that the most scutable form of assessment for local rating is to obtain from each owner of landed property his valuation, and if the valuation is considered too low, that the Government should have power at any time within six months after the owner’s valuation has been sant in, to take such property at the valuation; but in that case 10 per cent should be added thereto to guard against vexatious disturbance. The Board to review all valuations and to report to the Tar Department if it thinks any property under-valued.” Accounts amounting to JBI7O 6s 6d were passed for payment and the meeting terminated. COURTENAY. A meeting of the Courtenay Eoad Board was held on Oct. 16. All the members were present. Correspondence was read— Prom Mr J. Gill, for a lease of the Tramway Eoad adjoining hia land. Consideration of the application was deferred nntil a reply had been received from the Selwyn County Council. From Mr J. C. Sheldon, regarding a water-race. Referred to Mr C. L. Davies. Prom the Selwyn County Council, referring to assessments under the Eating Act. It was resolved, in reply, to forward a copy of the following resolution—“ That the Commissioner of Tares be informed, if the Government will contribute one half the cost of compiling the county assessment rolls, copies will be supplied to the Government free of charge.” From the Eailway Department, regarding cattle trespassing on the lino at Datfield. Lawton. A legal opinion was ordered to bo taken regarding reserves. Accounts amounting to J 5132 16s 6d were passed for payment. LITTLE EIYEE. An ordinary meeting of the Little Eiver Eoad Board was held on Oct. 4; present— Messrs Buchanan (chairman). White and Parkinson. Correspondence was read from Mr A. J. Joblin, stating a price for which he would place 150yds of shingle on certain roads. The offer was accepted, the shingle to he placed on the Cemetery Eoad under the directions of the Clerk. From, Mr A. J. Parkinson, asking permission to occupy a small piece of land on the roadside near Sally’s Bay. It was resolved to ask the Land Board if this land is under the control of the Board, if so, that applications should bo invited to lease it. The Clerk was instructed to make an estimate of the cost of a now bridge on Buchanan’s Eoad, and it was resolved to inform the County Council that this bridge is over thirty feet in span, and unsafe for traffic. Tenders for repairs to Okuta Valley to Hilltop Eoad were received, and that of Mr Joseph Johnson was accepted. No tender was accepted for work on the road from Okute Valley to French Farm Hill. The Clerk was instructed to have certain repairs effected on the road opposite the new court-house at Little Eiver. It was resolved to ask Messrs Buchanan’s trustees the terms upon which they would sell a road diversion through Eural Section 25248. Mr M’Phail wrote regarding a slip on Mount Bossu Koad, which the Clerk was instructed to attend to.. After passing accounts to the amount of JE64 and transacting routine business, the meeting terminated. —A meeting of the Board of Health was then held, at which it was resolved that the Medical Officer should be asked to report on some health matters. WAIPAEA. An ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Oct. 3; present—Messrs J. D. Lance (chairman), J. Douglas, J. Little, J. H. Hall and G. D. Greenwood. Mr Earshman attended to ask that the road promised to be made towards Mr G. H. Barton’s section 36337 should be extended towards bis section. It was decided to do the work asked for by Mr Earshman at the same timo that Mr Barton’s was done, as far as the money already accrued and to be received would go.; It was decided to call for tenders for about fifty chains of metalling on the Stonyhurst Eoad, formation and metalling on Croft’s Eoad, and formation, and metalling on Denton’s Eoad. The Surveyor was instructed to have some repairs made to culverts on the Montserrat Koad. Accounts amounting to £14,6 5s 6d were passed for payment. WEST EYEETON. An ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Oct. 8; present—Messrs Addinoll (chairman), Conway, Hunter, Horrell and Smith. Mr Farrell was appointed assistant ranger. It was resolved that the fixed deposit of JEI6O should be renewed for six months. It was agreed that 2d per dozen should be paid for small birds’eggs, 6d per dozen for young blackbirds’ heads or blackbirds’ eggs, and 4d each for blackbirds. The Surveyor was instructed to invite tenders for clearing gorse on Chapman’s Boundary Eoad, and for breaking stones on the Downs Eoad. The Surveyor was directed to have the ruts on Sheafs Eoad filled with shingle, and to widen the roadway from Horrellville to the church. _ A quantity of unimportant business having been transacted the meeting terminated.
