SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Eangiora Committee was held on evening ; Mr C. I. Jennings in the chair. The master's report stated the average attendance to be good, and the roll number to be 425. It was stated that three scholars had not attended the requisite number of times during the quarter, and it was decided to send their parents the usual notice. The chairman was instructed to apply to the Board for two grates j and to have the school buildings covered with iron, the shingles being past repair. Mr W. Luxton's motion to discontinue merit prizes in the school, was again brought up. The master, in his report,' stated that he was not strongly in favour of continuing the prizes, principally on the ground that no system seemed to secure a fair distribution. After a long discussion it was agreed to have the matter brought forward at the annual meeting of householders next month. Attention was drawn to the too free use of the school tennis court by the public, and it was decided to ask the headmaster to draw up some regxtlationa in respect to it. Messrs Graham and Ball were appointed a : Visiting Committee for the month, ancl the meeting terminated. A special : meeting of the St Albans .School Committee was held'in the main school oh Wednesday evening ; -present— Messrs T. Palmer (chairman). T.' C. Norris, H. E. Morgan, J. M’Cleave, J. Brboker, H. Owen and C. Chaplin. The meeting was called to consider an appeal made by Miss -S. E. Smith, head-miatreas of the side school, against the action of the headmaster of the main school in changing her pupil teachers, and to reconsider the applications for the position of second assistant master. The Board having submitted ten candidates for the committee’s selection, and having included Mr A. Bowbyes’s name among them, he was again recommended for the position. Eegarding the change of pupil teachers, it was resolved —“That the arrangements in regard to the placing of the pupil teachers be left in the hands of the headmaster.”
