The Hawks’s :Bay cricketers arrived from the south by the express last evening, and will indulge in batting practice at Lanwittw .Park this morning. The team comprises a number of fine batsmen, and also several good bowlers, and is on the whole a stiong combination. Although ’unsuccessful; In the match against Otago, the Hawk S’s Bay representatives are confident of making :a ' good match with Canterbury on - Saturday and Monday next. The Canterbury team includes some o! the best local batsmen, whilst it possesses two first-class bowlers in Eoberfcsqa and Hm. ~ • An adjourned meeting of those interested in the formation of a cricket club at Avonlide was held in the Canterbury Eowing Club's boathouse.last evening. There was an attendance of about twenty-five, and Mr E. H. Pavitt was voted to the chair. Thirty members were elected, and a code of rulei-presented by a. sub-committee was adopted. Officers wore elected as follows: —President, Mr W. P. Cowlishaw; vicepresidents, Messrs W- E. Mitchell, J. Shand, H. P. Hill,S, Z. Bassett, J. A. H. Marciel, and Dr Lomax-Smith 3 honorary secretary, and treasurer, Mr H. - Murray;'general'committee, Messrs J. P. Newman, F. I. Cowlishaw, E. H. Pavitt, H, C. Eidley-and- E. F. Nicoll. Mr W. P. Cowlishaw has allowed the club the use of a piece of ground in bis property, and a sab-committee was appointed to get it into ndertornni season.
