SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The usual monthly meeting of the Bast Lyttelton School Committee was held oh Monday evening; present—Messrs J. T. Brice (chairman), N. C. Schumacher, S. E. Webb, W. Eadcliffe, C. Wilcox, 6. Laurenaon, H. I. Hobden, T. C. Field, Eev 0. Coatss and Mr J. T. Giffen (secretary). The head-master’s report stated that the average attendance was 630. The newlyappointed pupil-teachers, Misses Curtis and O’Brien, had commenced duty and were giving general satisfaction. The chairman was empowered to taka action regarding truant children. It was resolved to vote 20a for the purchase of chemicals for the use of the schools. A petition, signed by between 200 and 300 householders, represent‘ng about 600 children, protesting against the new division of the district was received, and ordered to be forwarded to the Board of Education. Mr Laurenson moved and Mr Field seconded the following resolution, which was carried unanimously appointing pupil teachers next year, this committee trusts that its successors will give every consideration to any application which may be made by Misses Maude Just, Jessie Wilson and Lottie Wardle, these young ladies haying already acted as monitors for over a year with every satisfaction to the head-master and hia staff.” A committee consisting of Messrs Willcox, Eadcliffe, Field, Schumacher, and the chairman was appointed to arrange regarding the liquidation of a liability ;arisjug from the purchase of prizes last Christmas,, The meeting then terminated. • ■ > A meeting of the Kaiapoi School Committee was held on Monday; present—Messrs Moore (in the chair), Feldwiok, Butcher, CaverhilJ, Coup and Ellen. absence were received from Messrs Fraser, Johnston and Fisher. A letter was read from the. Education Board, refusing to allow pupil teachers to serve another year; also recommending the appointment of F. Mathews and A. Lynekey as pupil teachers. It was decided to make the appointments recommended. The head-master’s report was -read, covering list of absentee children, and it was referred to the Visiting Committee. The head-master also wrote regarding balance of books and closing school on a day to be fixed for the competition for the'Humana Society’s prizes. An extension of time was granted to the Visiting Committee to complete the sale of surplus books lately left in their bands. It was resolved to continue giving prizes for attendance, as the majority of.the committee considered such action tended to materially improve the school, and the head-master was favourable to the system. The question raised at a former meeting regarding the purchase of a piano, was further adjourned. Accounts amounting to jBIO 13s 5d were passed for payment, ■ad some routine business was transacted.
