NATIVE INQUIRY.
[Teh Press Association."! WANGANUI, Jan. 28. District JudgM Kotfcio commenced the first sitting under the commission issued by tie Governor, at Waitotara on Friday, in the presence of a large number of Natives. Charles Wallace, Native interpreter, Otaki, gave evidence as to being present when a cheque for *£5400 (the subject o i the inquiry) was handed to Mr Williams, a.j.d from what took place witness understood ■that Williams vaa to cash the cheque at P&toa and bring the money to the Natives next day. Wiromu Ifaiaka was examined at length, and corroborated the previous ■witness. Mr Churton, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Patea, gave evidence aa to cashing the cheque presented by Wiliismo cn Dec. 29, 1880, and stated that as far as ho knew witness was cashing the cheque for the Natives. The inquiry waa continued yesterday, when Major Brown, Mr Fisher and other witnesses were examined.
