The attendance at the Caledonian sports and the Bluff regatta was the largest on record, the latter especially taking a leap of from two to three thousand over last year. Fully ten thousand people went by rail to the port. The regatta was a very poor affair, showing great lack of spirit. Only one cutter of euy tonnage entered for the vessels’ race, and as the wind was scant, that and the other sailing races were little more than drifting ma’.chas, while two events did not take place. In the inrigged four-oared race one of the Port Chalmers boats was fouled at tbe start, and the lot were recalled; but three went over the course. Two more attempt!! were made to get the race off, and finally it was left to two Otago boats, the Wairema winning.
