PAPANUI SPORTS .
The sports at Papatmi, under the auspices of the Oddfoiloiv:-/ and. Foresters’ Friendly Societies ot the district, which ware held in the local Domain on Monday, proved.highly successful. The arrangements made were excellent. The Christchurch Professional band discoursed selections at intervals, and numerous attractions were provided for tho children. S. Brentford won the quoit match, in which eleven competed; C. M’Griith the sack race ; K, Poulson, the girls’ race under sixteen; E, Rainbow, the bicycle race of one mile for prizes of .81 and 10s; Mrs Pearspo, the married women's race of 100yds; H. Hayes, the running high jump; A. Hittaenbuttoll, tho ono mile handicap for a trophy by Messrs Reece and Sons, valued at 30s and £1 added; J. IJ.1 J . Horner, putting the 161 b shot; A. Opie, the men’s hurdle race of 410ydfj; E. M’Padden, the boys’ race under eighteen; J. Dayburgh, the running long jump (19ft); H. Hayes, the men’s walking race of cue mile; T. Atkinson, the Friendly Societies’ race of 150ydej T. Atkinson, the married men’s race; J. Kenwood, the two mile bicycle race; Mr Buick, the old men’s race of 100yds; J. Smith, throwing the hammer (06ft 2in.) A grand handicap of 100, 220, and 440yds was the chief event, the prizes being .85 5s trophy and JB3 3s cash added, 30s, and 15 s. T. Atkinson won the 100yds, P. D. Mansell being second, and A. Butler third. A. Butler won the 220yds, '.5.'. Atkinson being second and C. Langdon third. A, Butler wo < the 440yds, M. Duggan being second and T. Addnron third. Butter therefore secured two fifa’s and a third ; Atkinson one first, one second and one third, while Mansell and Duggan tied for third position on points. Several minor events closed the programme ; and iu the evening a “social” was held in the Town Hall.
