[Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 2, At tho Chess Congress to-day Pleasants opened with the Buy Lopez against Leliovre, and a good game ended in a draw. Mellor offered the Evans’ Gambit to Baines, who accepted it. At tbe fifth move Barnes adopted tha P B 4 defence. Mellor sacrificed several Pawns to keep up his attack,.and at the thirteenth move had lost a Binhop and three Pawns for hia opponent’s Knight’s Rook. A very interesting game followed to the twentyeighth move, when Mellor made a miscalculation and resigned on tha thirtieth move. Edwards adopted tho Sicilian Defence against Cleland. In endeavouring to force matters he lost a second piece, but made such a stubborn defence that over seventy moves were made before ho was mated. Hookham opened with the Ruy Lopez against Brown. At the twenty-sixth move ho lost his Quocn for t» Rook and a Pawn, and attar a hardfought game resigned on the ninetieth move. Borton played the Sicilian Defence to Smith's move. A very even game resulted to the twenty-ninth move, when Borton gained a Pawn, and pursuing hia advantage Queened a Pawn on the forty eighth move. Smith resigned a few moves later on. Mouatt bad a bye. Brown ia now leading with 5J- wins to 1£ loses, but be has still to take a bye. Hookham and Cleland are second, with 41 to H each.
