SOUTHERN MAORI ELECTION.
The official declaration of the poll took place at the Native BChoolhouse, Kaiapoi, at noon On' Saturday. The total number of votes polled by Tame Parata was 371, of which three were informal, Teota Pite Mutu polled 182. The Returning Officer declared Tame Parata elected. The announcement of the result of the poll was received with applause. Hoani Uru returned thanks to the electors on behalf of the successful candidate and Hone Parateae Tanaauiarangi A>poko on behalf of the defeated candidate, and expressed his regret that since his own election Kaiapoi had failed to secure the election of a local man.
Taituha Hape, in moving a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, said that in allowing the scrutineers to txamjae all the voting papers the Returning Officer had done on this occasion what had never been done before in the electorate, and that his action in the matter had given great satisfaction to the electors.
