[Special to Pbess Association.! WASHINGTON. Dec. il. The Committee of Ways and Means recommends that the duty on wire should be reduced to 20 ’ per cent. LONDON, Dec. 11. The Tongariro’s butter from New Zealand has arrived in good condition. At the wool sales only a poor selection was offered. Prices remain unchanged. It is understood that an American syndicate is willing to co-operate with the London syndicate to underwrite the balance of the Melbourne Board of loan, provided a prompt decision be arrived at in the matter. Dec. 12, The Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works has refused tbe syndicate’s tender of .£900,000 worth of bank deposits. EOME, Dec. 12. Maquay and Hooker’s bank in the city has suspended.
