CANTERBURY PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association was held on Friday. MrT. J. Gledhill, (Vice-President) occupied the chair. Several persons were admitted to membership. With regard to Canterbury College, the Committee expressed its determination of following up the movement until the governing body, which has control of so many public institutions and the management of such rich public endowments, is elected by the people; and to enable the Committee to proceed on sure lines, a SabCommittee of four wad appointed to collect facts with regard to the constitution of the ' governing body and the, conditions surrounding the endowments. In accordance with the rules one Vice-President and three members of the Committee were balloted out to retire this quarter, their places to be filled np at the quarterly meeting which will be held during the coming week. Mr Clarkson gave notice of motion calling upon the Government to introduce . a Fair Bent Bill to affect Both town and country lands; also a motion dealing with the abolition of distraint for rent. Mr H« G. Ell gave notice to move—" That, In view .of the great suffering and distress brought upon che coal miners and their' wives and families through the recent strike of toe miners in England to gain an equitable share of the wealth their labour produces, and of the great loss and disruption of trade caused thereby, this Association, in general meeting assembled, would earnestly urge upon the Government to' introduce a measure having for its object tbe nationalisation of sufficient coal mines' to supply the local requirements of the people.”
