IMPERIAL POLITICS.
[Special to Press Aesooiation.] LONDON, August 8. Mr Macartney presented a petition from South Australia to the House of Commons against Home Rule. Mr Gladstone intimated that the House would not adjourn till the Home Rule Bill and supply had been passed. The recess will be then taken, and another cession will ho held in the autumn. Mr Chamberlain, in a magazine article, contends that the Home Rule Bill empowers the Irish Parliament to foster Catholic prejudices, coerce Ulster, and legalise the Plan of Campaign. Mr W. Brodriek, the member for Guildford, in addressing a political masting stigmatised Mr Gladstone as an old donkey, and said it was time he waa turned out. The audience became very indignant, and turned on Mr Brodriek, who fled from the meeting and took refuge in a farmhouse. August 9. Dr Ambrose, Nationalist, has been elected for Mayo, in place of Mr Deasy. The autumn session will he devoted to the consideration of Employers’ Inability, Pariah Councils, and the Equalising of Rates Bills. Mr Chaplin contended that the closing of the mints had despoiled India of twenty millions. Sir W. Hareourt retorted that it waa a mischievous statement made with a view to influencing native opinion. Sir John Lubbock considered that the increased value of the rupee would recoup the loss on uncoined silver. CALCUTTA, August 8, A political mission, under Sir H. Durand, will visit Oabul on behalf of the Indian Government.
