TO THE EDITOR. ' Sxe,—Surely your correspondent “Kaiapoi” is not accountable for hia actions when in his letter on Monday he uses arguments that are both unsound and foolish. In the first place he wants to shut up the drapers because he considers there is tnore temptation in dress than in drink. Well, admitting that, does he really mean to say that yielding to the temptation of dress brings disgrace and Doverty and ruin, and that in yielding to that temptation children have been starved to death, and hundreds of men and women have lost their characters and have gone to an early grave ? Let him read in your issue of Monday the account of the man who was found by the police in a hovel in a most deplorable condition and under the influence of liquor, and can he dare to say that dress will ever bring anyone down to such a condition ? Again he states that “all doctors say that good home-brewed ale is bone and sinew.” Once more he is talking at random, all the doctors never said any euch thing; perhaps he means that all the Kaiapoi doctors said so. Heie, in hia last argument, he shows the most ignorance. He says that if all the temperance people wonld try and get an Act passed compelling brewers to use only malt, hops and sugar, and not chemicals and drugo, they would do more for humanity than they are doing now. Before an Act of that kind would be any use we would have to get a Bill passed to stop the importation of liquor. Let your correspondent come over to the prohibition side, and help us to drive from tho land the vile stuff which any reasonable person knows is a blot on humanity.—l am, &o. LINWOOD.
