The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Plora arrived in port yesterday morning from Dunedin. She is in comznand of Captain Allman, late of the Ectomahana, whioh vessel is now laid up in Dnnedin. The Plora is to itake the Penguin’s running on the coast while the latter vessel undergoes extensive alterations at Dunedin. A large number of people took the opportunity of visiting the graving dock yesterday for the purpose of getting a view of the hull of the Spanish training ship Nautilus. Her yacht-like lines were much admired, and many were the remarks passed on the difference between the hull below water-mark of this famous old tea clipper and those of the modern merchant ships. Things in naval architecture have changed during the past twentyfive years, and the primary consideration nowadays with designers is carrying capacity, and not speed. Messrs Kinsey and Co., agents for the steamer Wakatu. have arranged that the steamer shall call at Port Robinson every trip from Wellington and Kaikoura to this port, thus allowing any of the men who are engaged on the works there an opportunity of visiting Christchurch.
