THPJ FUNERAL,

The respect in which the late Mr John Olliviar was hold was shown by the largo and representative attendance at hia funeral yesterday afternoon. The corlaye, numbering soma fifty privets carriages and other vehicles, left his late residence at 2.30 p.m. for the Heatheote cemetery, where it was joined by a large number of persons, and there must have been at least two hundred and fifty at the grave, where the funeral eervioe of the Church of England was read by the Vea Archdeacon Cholmondeley and the Esv Francis Knowles. The scene at the grave was a striking one, the number of . grey heads giving evidence of the fact that nearly all the old settlers had met to pay their last respects to a departed comrade. The coffin, of polished rimu, bore the simple inscription: “John Ollivier, died July 31, 1893 ; aged 81 years,” and was covered with beautiful wreaths. the offices in town were closed, as also were all the business places on the line of route, and many flags were at half-mast out of respect to the deceased’s memory. ■

Before proceeding with the business at the Christchurch Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning,' Mr R. Beetham, Resident Magistrate, spoke feelingly of the death of the late Mr John Ollivier, and referred in eulogistic terms to the deceased gentleman’s connection with the magistracies of the Provincial district, and the Christchurch Court in particular. As a mark of respect to Mr Ollivier’s memory, Mr Beetham ordered the Court to be closed at one o’clock.
