The Rev George Burgess, of London, has been called to the pastorate of the Congregational Church, Beresford street. The Rev Mr Watts, of Queensland, was the second candidate. The eleventh annual show of the Wellington Poultry and Pigeon Association was opened this afternoon by the Governor. The exhibits were not so numerous as last year, but the quality is quits up to the standard. Auckland, Napier, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Wairarapa, Blenheim, Nelson, Greymouth, Westport, Christchurch, Dunedin and country exhibitors are represented. The Ballance challenge trophy, promoted in order to perpetuate the memory of the late Premier, who was an ardent fancier, fell to a Wanganui breeder, Mr J. T. Sinclair. It was allotted to the class for Langshan cockerel and pullets, and Mr Sinclair obtained eight points, Mr George Remington (Wellington) six points, Mr G. A. Darkness (Nelson) third with two points. Owing to the continuous rains, damage has been done to the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company's line near Oban and Manukau, and as a result the train was unable to get through to-night, the passengers returning to Levin. Premises secured by the Education Board ware opened by the Inspector, the newly appointed headmaster being the only teacher to attend. No boys attended the school. To-night a monster meeting was hold, at which several members of the Committee spoke, and one member of the Board. A resolution was carried, on the motion of Dr Mackie, cordially approving of the action of the Committee, and expressing the hope that it will continue to vindicate its rights. A second resolution urged that the time has arrived for the abolition of Education Boards, that town Committees should carry out the duties in the towns and County Councils in the country districts; Inspectors to be under the £ apartment, and removable at least every two years ; copies to be sent to members and the Minister. Lummas was charged with having assaulted Elizabeth Campbell with intent. The offence was alleged to have occurred in the prosecutor's house on the night of August 1. Mr Sinclair appeared for the accused. Sergeant-Major Bosnian asked for a remand, as a principal witness was in the country. Mr Sinclair offered no objection, and the case was remanded to Monday at 11 a.m. Bail was fixed, accused in £IOO and two sureties in .£SO each. GEBYMOUTH, August 8. A general meeting of importers this evening unanimously resolved to protest against the extra charge of a shilling per ton which, the Railway Commissioners have notified will come into force on Monday next, from which date they will receive delivery of goods at the vessel’s side, on the ground that the consignees will receive no advantage from the extra charge. DUNEDIN, August 8. At the City Court to-day, Patrick Dwyer, Licensee of the European Hotel, was fined .£3 and costs for Sunday trading, and the license ordered to be endorsed, though the Magistrate said that if he had any option he would not have so ordered.
