A LICENSING CASE.

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. August 2. The Pakipaki licensing case was before the Chief Justice to-day. The Havelock Committee had refused a license, and then granted it upon an Ordsr-in-Council being issued validating a technical omission. Sir James Preaderg&st said that the Order-iu-Couueil could not stand good, as Government had no power under the Licensing Act to issue it. The Committee bed, therefore acted without legislative authority, and he ordered a writ of certiorari to issue quashing the certificate, Sir Robert Stout appeared for the Maoris, who were the plaintiffs.
