Some apprehension was caused to*day in the town when the news was received that the steamer Chingtu, a Chinese trader, was apparently drifting ashore near Richmond Heads. Subsequently it was learned that the steamer had broken her shaft, but managed to anchor three miles off shore. Owing to the heavy sea running, the tug which went to the assistance of the disabled vessel ran great risk, but eventually succeeded in getting her in tow and reached Bryon Bay. It is believed that the vessel will be taken to Brisbane. [Per Press Association.] NELSON, August 1. Jacob Granger, a settler, was found dead on the toad near Tophouse, evidently the result of a trap accident, which must have occurred some days previously. Early on Tuesday morning a child named Grace Patterson, aged twelve months, died suddenly at its parents’ residence, Edgeware road, St Albans. The child had been suffering from an attack of measles.

A man named Cornelius Murnby was brought to the Hospital yesterday from Cheviot. It appears that the man was engaged in road-making, when a large stone rolled on his left leg and broke it.
