A China steamer brings details of the burning of the Spanish vessel Don Juan, which was subsequently towed into Manilla, in the Philippine Islands. Ninetyeight of the passengers and crew were rescued. Many who climbed the rigging lost their hold and fell into the flames. A boat crowded with passengers was upset by the sharks which surrounded the vessel, and the occupants were devoured. The fire broke out amongst the kerosene which formed a portion of the cargo.
