RAILWAY SERVANTS’ SOCIETY. [PBOM OUB SPECIAL COEBBSPONDEHT.] WELLINGTON, July 31.

At the annual “ social ” of tha Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants held here on Saturday night, Mr Hoban, of Christchurch, occupied the chair, and among those present were Messrs Tanner, J. Kelly, W. M'Lean, Sandford, W. Hutchison and A. W. Hogg, M.H.R.’s. The Chairman, in responding to the toaot of “ The Executive,” expressed the hope that the employees and the Railway Commisaionera would soon bo more in touch ■with one another than at present. Ho contended that Government Railway employees should not be treated differently from men in other departments, but that any disputes should bo settled by arbitration. He did not think, however, that the Commissioners know the real state of affairs: if they did he was sure they would agree to arbitration which •would be better for all concerned. fPsa Pbbsb Association.]

The Bakers’ Union gave a dinner on Saturday night to Mr A. Collins, J.P., at which the Premier and several members of the House were present. A number of those present were in a very excitable condition towards the end, and a fight occurred in which more than one black eye was given* The scene is said to have been of a most discreditable character.

At the usual meeting of tho St Albans Borough Council last evening it was decided to spend £&o at once in employing men of the district out of work, the moat deserving cases to be taken first. A deputation from the unemployed waited on the Sydenham Borough Council last evening, and asked it to do something to relievo the congested state of the laoour market. The Council passed a motion instructing the Clork to keep a record of married men out of employment in the Borough who are anxious to obtain temporary relief at the rato of 5a a day. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Thursday evening to consider the question.
