Among the passengers by the Takapuna for Wellington are Mr B. Mitchelson, MALE., and Messrs Moss, Davis and A. Judd in connection with the Licensed Victuallers' Association, and also the President of the Trades and Labour Council, and Mr Bycroft, who represents the Engineers’ Council, to attend the Wellington labour conference. James Evans, for sacrilegious stealing from the Roman Catholic Church at Panmure, has been sentenced to six months* hard labour. The New Zealand Accident Insurance Company has declared an interim dividend of per cent for the half-year ended June 30 last.

The man whose diseased state was the subject of strong remarks at the last meeting of the Benevolent Association died in the hospital on Saturday night. Three of the Governor's children are victims to measles.

At Mr Niuian Melville's meeting tonight* a resolution was carried demanding as a right for the people the power of direct veto, and calling upon the member (or the district and the Premier to vote for Sir Robert Stout's Direct Veto Bill. DUNEDIN, July 31.
James Alsford alias Alfred King, who was caught red-handed on the Caledonian ground pocket-picking on Saturday, was this morning sentenced to twelve months' hard labour on three charges.
