FIRE.
At 7.40 last evening an alarm of fire vm given from the box at the corner of EHmore and Barbadoes streets. The Fir# Brigade quickly turned out, and it was found that a four-roomed cottage belonging to Mr J. C. Corr, solicitor, and occupied by hia wife, who lived there alone, on the; North Belt, close to Madras street, was in flames. The engines wore connected with the main sewer and water wai got on very smartly, but-owing to the dry nature of the timber but little could be done beyond saving the houses of Mr Cliff on the one side and Mr J. E. King on fche other. Three young men, named Butler, Sharp' and Goston, who were the first to arrive at the fire, state that, finding no one in the house, they burst open one of fche front windows and got inside. The back part of the house was then in flames, ana font candles were found burning on a piece of. cardboard on the floor in tho corner of one of the front rooms, and placed in such a> manner as to catch the ccrim of the wall a# soon as they burned down. Owing to] these and other suspicious circumstances,’ Detectives O'Connor and Benjamin arrested’ Mrs Corr last night on a charge of. incendiarism. She states that she left the house at 6,30 p,m, The house is insured for £IOO with the New Zealand Insurance Company, and the furniture for £6O in the’ .fiamooffiee.
