CHRYSANTHEMUM SOCIETY.
■ro TE3 EDITO3J. Sis,—l notice in this morning's issue a correspondent opposing the proposed Chrysanthemum Society. As a chrysanthemum grower, importer and exhibitor I think it is an absolute necessity,, and strongly move in the matter, for I think it is quite time the above Society was on foot. How can we, as working men, afford to invest our odd shillings in purchasing plants, pots, stakes, &c., and work hard for ten months with the hope of securing a few prizes as a compensation for our ounlay ? It i-i very disappointing to find when we make application for our prize-money that we have to accept 10s or 15s in the £. I agree with onr Sumner antagonist that it is robbing the Horticultural Society of its “golden egg,” and chonld feel extremely sorry to see the Society out of existence altogether. Bub it is not intended by the promoters of the projected Society to work against the interest of the Horticultural Society. On the other hiind, we shall do all in our power to keep is afloat. But I must say that the sooner it collapses and is reorganised the better. The idea of the promoters is to endeavour to increase and further the cultivation of the chrysanthemum by offering prize-money in larger amounts than hitherto.—l am, &c., G. M. SMALL.
