CHARITABLE AID.
rPsB Press Association.! WELLINGTON, March 21. The District Hospital Board to-day granted the amount asked for by the Hospital Trustees, ,£6840. -At a meeting of the United Board, however, there was a discussion over some .£5765, required by the Wellington Benevolent Society. Several members said relief was too lavish, and given without enquiry. Another pointed out that the amount required now was nearly double that asked for in the hard pinch five years ago. Mr Petheriek asserted that undeserving people got relief and spent the money in public-houses. Challenged to give names, he said he would do so, but not at that meeting. The Chairman explained that numbers of people came here in the belief that the place was highly prosperous, and not getting the work they expected left their families on the hands of the Board. Eventually an amendment was carried by five to four, reducing the amount to JBSOOO. The sum of .£6703 wan also voted for other institutions and adjacent districts.
