ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Ashburton Boroogh Council was held on Monday evening. Alt the members were present except Councillor Flower, from whom an apology was tendered by Councillor Duncan. The' Major reported tho debit balance at the' bank as standing at £IOSB 10s 7d, and the* income received from all sources since last meeting bad been £B7 os. The PaymasterGeneral wrote notifying payment to the Borough account of £2 19a 6d, fines, fees. &c., collected during the quarter ended Dec, 31 in tho Ashburton R.M, Court. The Commissioner of Crown Lauds wrote stating that no funds were available for clearing gorse off unsold Government sections in the riverbed, but he would make' an effort to effer them for sale as soon aa possible, eo as to obtain occupiers who would be responsible for the' clearing. The matter was left in the Mayor’s hands to endeavour to get the sections vested in the Borough. The Cemetery Board wrote, asking that the road dividing the old cemetery ground be closed, but the Council has no power to close any of the roads within the Borongh. Leave was granted to Mr George Coleman to have asphalt laid in Fast and Tancred streets, in front of Mr Collier’s shop. Mr M. B. Denshire complained of having been overcharged in regard to the channelling of William street. It was decided to adhere to the original agreement. The ■ Gao ■ Company wrote, offering revised terms for lighting the town, and the matter was referred to the Lighting Committee to report at-next meeting. The library report was read and adopted. The names of Messrs W. Kidd and J. Bonn were added to the list of members of the Fire Brigade. The report on the Brigade was as follows The annual inspection of the Brigade was held on Thursday lest, when there was a largo attendance. The men presented a vary smart appearance, their uniforms and accoutrements being kejpt in excellent order. The whole of tho Brigade plant was also inspected, and seems to bo in very good condition, and when (he manual engine has been overhauled and repaired the whole plant will be in thorough working order. Tour Committee would call special attention to . the accommodation at the engine-shed for -the Brigade plant, and would strongly urge the necessity of making some improvement;' Additional room is urgently needed for (ha practical working of the plant,- and your Committee would very strongly impress upon the CounciFthe necessity of 'increasing it. The report was adopted. The Engineer’s report was . read and adopted. The usual notice was ordered to be given; to levy a rate for the incoming year. A petroleum license was granted to Messrs Miles and Co. Accounts to the amount of £75 11s 5d were passed for payment. The Council then sat as a Domain Board, but the business was only formal.
