[Pas Press Association.] , WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. The in ter provincial match, Otago v. Wellington, began.at the Basin Reserve this morning. The weather was fine until •boot four o’clock, when a drizzling rain ■et is, and at 4.15 p.m. an adjournment for half an hour was. made. About 1500 people were present. : Harper captained the visitors and R. Blacklook the local men. The wicket was in good condition, though late in the afternoon it bumped a .little. Harper, winning the toes, elected to bat. Parker and Johnston were first to do battle to the bowling of Frith and Dryden. Parker was clean bowled by Frith with the score at 8, and at 27 Lawton failed to stop a beauty from the same bowler. Ball, the new-comer, made things a bib lively, and a change in bowling was necessitated, Upham relieving Dryden, and with his first ball dismissed Johnston for a well-played dozen—three for 40. Harper was bowled off his pads without Bearing, and Williams was caught off Cross, also without, having added to the total —iftve fpr 45. Fisher joined Bell, and, both biteinen being set, the score rose rapidly until Bell was run out with the total at 89. • CroXford was the next man, and another, . stand was made, both hitting freely- all round, especially the incomer ; bht Upham at last effected a separation by clean bowling Fisher for a well-hit 37, including six 4’s—seven for 128. After a couple of singles had been added. Frith dismissed. Croxford for. 28, his pcore including two 6’s and' two 4’s. Rattray was bowled without scoring. Hope, the last msn, partnered Stronaoh, and carried the score.to.l4s, when the latter was smartly stamped by Niven. The fielding of the local men was far from being first-class, and bad-returns from fieldsmen on several occasions added to the score. At the luncheon,. Mr W. H. Levin presided,: and congratulated the Otago team OB the success of the tour, and trusted that the match with Otago would be made an annual fixture. 'At two o’clock Wellington began its innings. Cross and A. Blacklook facing the bowling of Lawton and Hope. Both batsmen played very steadily, and the first half-hour brought up only twenty-four runs. Lawton then gave way to Fisher ; but runs still coming, and more freely than before, caused frequent changes in the bowling. At 65 Cross gave Williams n difficult chance, and he made an excellent attempt at it. A little later on Blacklook should have been run out, bat Lawton returned the ball to the wrong end.; At 91 Harpei got Blacklook leg before wicket. Blacklock played fine cricket for his runs and never gave a chance. Gore followed, but after a single hid bean added, was run out. Two for 92. Izard joined Cross, and Lawton and Hope again took np the trundling. At 118 Croes stepped out to one from Hope, and missing it, the ball struck the wicketkeeper’s pads and rebounded on to the •tamps, dislodging, the bails before the batsman had time to get back. Cross gave n splendid exhibition, which was only marred by a difficult chance. His hitting /was.free, and clean to all parts of the ground, and his score included seven fours, all boundary hits. The rain increasing, the game was stooped for half an hour. On resuming Fuller filled Cross’ place, but was clean bowled by Hope without scoring. Four for 118. Blacklock, the captain, was next, and hit Hope to leg for a brace of foursj but soon lostrlzard, who fell a victim to Hope with • ball which broke from leg—s for 131. Dryden followed, and after cutting Hope to ths boundary for 4, lost Blacklock, who was given out Ibw to Lawton—6 for 135. Dryden, Frith and Niven fell in rapid succession, and when Upham, the last man, went to the wickets the score was still 135. Fitzsimmons cut Hope to the boundary for 4, and hit him to leg for a similar number, and then for 6, thus taking the score over that of Otago. Fourteen runs were scored off Hope’s over. Fitzsimmons was eventually caught in the slips after making 17, the innings closing for 158, or 13 more than Otago’s. Following are the scores

Total 188 lawtma took threa wickets for 41, Hope five tor 88, Ha’per on> for 2, Fisher none for IS, Parker pc e for 13, At 5.45 p.m. stumps were drawn for the day, and the game will be resumed at 10.30 to-morrow morning. Drizzling rain is still falling, and the wicket will probably be dead. At midnight it was raining very heavily, and it is doubtful whether the cricket match will be continued to-morrow.
