A concert and dance in aid of the funds of the St Albans Cricket Club was held iu St Matthew's. Schoolroom yesterday evening. The room was tastefully decorated with flags and evergreens. The programme opened with an overture by the orchestra, after which Mr C. Read sang a song, which was encored. The Misses Holloway sang a duet very sweetly, and Mr J. Woodward sang “The Longshoreman’’ in capital style, and was greeted with’ an encore. Miss E. Long received a similar compliment for her song, " Cherry Ripe.” Mr 8. Dickey, with his Irish character -ketch and Sailor’s Hornpipe, fairly brought down the honse, as did Mr Empson with his comic songs. A quartette by Mrs Walker, Miss Bilton, Messrs Da Feu and Moore was nicely rendered, and Mr J. Hennessy was greeted with hearty applause for his song, u Alice, Where Act Thou.” In the second part, songs were sung by Misses Long, Bilton, Messrs Woodward, Read, Henneesy, Empson and Dickey. Mr A. H. Hobbs contributed a capital recitation, and the programme concluded with a farce entitled The Doctor's Shop. Mr Emmett was an efficient accompanist. After the conceit was over the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up with great spirit for several hours. The proceeds will be devoted to effecting improvements to the cricket ground.
