GENERAL BOOTH’S SCHEME.
[Special to Press Association.! LONDON, Mat 18. : General Booth will probably limit the first batch o£ emigrants "to five' hundred. He asserts that the, condition o£ the Army finances will not, delay the prosecution o£ the schema. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Mat 14. The Government believes that there, must be some mistake about the announce.* ment that General Booth intends to despatch the first batch of Salvation Army, settlers to New Zealand. Ministers have received no information on the subject, and no land has been allotted in Taranaki or elsewhere. Land was promised on condition that no criminals should be ex~ ported; and the first batch was to b® selected from the New Zealand contingent’ of the army. It was also understood that the English draft was to b® placed on a Home colony at first to get agricultural experience, and there has not yet been time to do this. The Premia has cabled to Mr Perceval for further information. It is possible that .the draft mentioned in the cable is intended for land privately offered.
