[Feb Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Mat 14. During the last five days the Otago dredge No. 222, which has been working where the Wellington Harbour Board decided to construct a new wharf, has taken away sis thousand tons of stuff. The Commissioner of Taxes states that the reductions made in Hawke’s Bay valuation do not amount to a large sum. There will be a sham fight at Island Bay on the Queen’s Birthday, and a review at Newtown Park in the afternoon, at which Lieutenant-Colonel Fox will be present. Mat 15. The Post’s correspondent at Featherstone says that the Wairarapa lake was opened yesterday after some resistance from the Maoris, who assembled in force, and had a fifteen-chain fence erected across the sandbar. The River Board and the Maoris were represented by solicitors, and at one time it looked as if there was going to bo a row. An Inspector and six armed policemen were present, but fortunately their services were not required. Eventually a compromise was effected between the parties.
