The s.s. Wainui arrived from Dunedin at 1 p.m. yesterday. She left Dunedin at 4 p.m. on May 13, and called at Timaru and Akaroa. She experienced strong southwest winds, accompanied by heavy sea, up the coast., The s.s. Omapere arrived from Westport at 1 a.m. yesterday with a cargo of coal. She left Westport at 1 p.m on Thursday and had fine weather to Cape Campbell, which she rounded at 1 p.m. on Friday. From thence to Lyttelton she experienced a heavy southerly gale, and was thirty-six hours in reaching port. The New Zealand Shipping Company's direct liner Acrangi went out into the stream at 4 p.m., on Saturday, and remained there till late last night pending the arrival of the Eotorua from Wellington with a number of homeward passengers. News, however, coming to hand that the Eotorua had put back to Wellington, on account of the heavy sea, the Aorangi left on the journey Home. The barque Peebleshira put to sea again yesterday morning. Captain Morgan, her late commander, was left behind for medical treatment. v Tha late chief officer. Captain Hannah, has been promoted to the command of the vessel, while Mr P. C. Hart, late of the ill-fated s.s. Elginshire, shipped as chief officer. Owing to the boisterous state of the weather during Friday and Saturday, the Canterbury Stevedoring Association was unable to complete the loading of the ships Hespericses, Portia and Coimbatore. All three vessels only require a very little cargo to fill them up, and if the weather is favourable to-day they will all be finished off.

The barque J. C. Julius arrived at the Heads on Saturday morning from Melbourne, ’.7ith sufficient coal to ballast her. Owing to the strong southerly gale the tug did not attempt to bring her into the harbour. The vessel is in command of Captain Christian, who reports leaving Melbourne on May G. and sighted the Snares on Tuesday last, meeting with strong southerly winds along the coast. She comes chartered to Messrs Friedlander Bros, for whom she loads for Home.
