HONOUR DUE.
TO THE EDITOE. Sik,— From my earliest youth (which means such a number of years that I do not care to be more particular) I have been a sincere admirer of the drama, and especially of Shaksperian plays. For the past fortnight or so I have had the pleasure of seeing Mr Walter Bentley in a variety of plays! On every evening I have been astonished at the wonderful versatility and talent displayed by Mr Bentley, who, I consider, is, without exception, the best actor we have seen in Christchurch, certainly during the twenty years I have resided here. The objdctbf my addressing you is to suggest that Dunedin has set us a good example, and that Christchurch as a University town should not let Mr Bentley and his splendid company depart from us without some recognition in the shape of a testimonial or something of that sort. It is true that the public baa shown its appreciation of this talented actor and company by attending the theatre in crowds, hut I think there is something more due. Mr Bentley himself as David Garrick taught us that the true actor does not look entirely to £ s d for his reward, and I therefore hope my suggestion may be carried out by someone more competent than myself.—l am, &c., VOX ET PRiETEREA NIHIL.
