PRIZE DISTRIBUTION.

WEST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL. The distribution of prizes to th* pupils attending the West Christ* church School took place yesterday afternoon. Messrs Bowden and Walter Johnson made the presentation at th# side school, Messrs Hill Fisher and Winny at the infant school, and Mr Mnn* nings (Chairman of the School Committee), and Messrs Chisnall and Bundle at the main school. The Chairman referred in feeling terms to the loss which they bad sustained through the death of Mr D. Reese, who had for many years been connected with the School Committee. The Oddfellows’ Hall at Sydenham was filled to overflowing yesterday afternoon by children and parents, upon the occasion of the distribution of some five hundred prizes by Mr T. S. Weston, Chairman of the North Canterbury Education Board. Mr Weston, who was briefly introduced by Mr J. L. Scott, congratulated both pupils and teachers upon, the progress made, and referred to the general enthusiasm of Sydenham people, which no doubt extended to matters educational. Hu opined that children educated at Sydenham would face the world well equipped, and would look back with gratitude to the work of Mr Baldwin and his staff

Mr Weston then proceeded to present the prizes, and first called Miss Elizabeth Steele to receive the silver medal presented by Mr Baldwin to the dux of the school in the girls’ department. This young lady also received, on behalf of her brother, who was unavoidably absent, the silver medal presented by the Rev H. B. Cocks for dux amongst the boys.
