MINING NEWS.

n?BOM OTJB OWN CORRESPONDENT. I REEPTON. Sept.' 5,

The following is the Stock Exchange report:—The battery returns to hand from the Big River, Fiery Cross, Globe, and No. 2 Keep-it-Dark, give a total of 25960 z of amalgam, of which the two first-named include contents of boxes for the full crushing. The Big River crushing just concluded yielded 1088 oz of retorted gold from 316 tons of quartz, and is one of the best efforts that portion of the field has yet made, while that of the Fiery Cross gives 20230 z of amalgam, estimated to produce 700 oz of retorted gold for 374 tons. Both are very substantial results which should leave handsome profits. Two dividends were declared payable this week, one each in the United Alpine and No. 2 Dark, distributing in all .£I4OO. Returns from several other batteries are expected by the end of next week. There has been no marked bxtra activity in the share market during the week, but a fair amount of business seems to have been done in a few lines at about last week’s quotations. Big Rivers eased a little in* value earlier in the week, but have a better tendency just now. Duthams have not been dealt in, and the ground is at present at the usual prospecting stage, with capital indications. The same may be said for Exchanges. Fiery Crosses, after a splendid month's yroik, remain at about previous rates, aud Golden Leads the same. This latter Company appears to be limiting its output and concentrating in a make of quartz which may develop a good bulk. Globes have been asked for at last week's figure, and the return from this mine to-day shows a marked improvement, which doubtless will become more pronounced from this out. Hercules show an advance, consequent on an improvement in the mine, of which further operations will give a better idea. Keep-ifc-Darks appear at former rates, and Lord Edwards have their usual firmness. Allow* ing for the dividend since paid. No. 2 Darks remain as before, and Pandora buyers are offering low prices, without sellers. Progress shares had buyers to-day at slightly over 11s, and Russells have been saleable all the week; United Alpines had a few transactions without further advance in price, and United Devonahites were in request at low rates.
