ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
[Special to Press Association.] [Received Sept. 4, at 10.30 a.m,] SHIPWRECK ' LONDON, Sept. 3. The Lizzie Horton, of Sydney, was wrecked in a hurricane on Gullinare shoals, and sank, but her crew were saved. A BARQUE MISSING. The barque Eeatemunde, from Newcastle to Penang, is posted as missing. [Received Sept. 4, at 8 p.nx.] SHOCKING- RAILWAY DISASTER. PARIS, Sept. 4. A train convoying Pronch troops to the manoeuvres became derailed at Calm out. Chalindry, near Dijon, and fell over a steep embankment. It is reported that two hundred men have been killed and many injured. [Received Sept. 4, at 11.30 a.m.] MELBOURNE, Sept. 4. According to the Underwriters’ Association it should bo the Ellen Rickman which is posted as missing, and not the Eestemuade. THE LOSS OP THE GAMBIER. The marine inquiry into the loss of the Gambler has begun. Captain Bell attributes the catastrophe to the Easby failing to port her holm, as required by the regulations. The starboard boat was capsized owing to passengers clutching at the chain attached to the Gambia’s side. When the vessel sank the boat was drawn under by the davits. A man named Thompson was severely injured while at work on the Waimakariri water-race on Thursday afternoon. Thompson and others were engaged lowering a scoop to the bottom of the race over the mouth of a culvert, when the unwieldy implement slipped, and the handle striking Thompson, who was at the bottom, inflicted a deep gash on the side of his head. The sufferer was conveyed to Sheffield, where Dr Meadows dressed the wound. An elderly man named William Maddrell was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from injuries sustained by falling from a tree at Sumner. In addition to a cut on the forehead, he was severely bruised and shaken by the fall.
