The Waitemata County Council has passed a resolution protesting against the provisions in the Slaughterhouse Act Amendment Bill, rest rioting country settlers from killing meat fer domestic? nee and disposing of the residue. Tho Council also condemned the proposals of Mr Jackson Palmer, M.H.R., in the amendments in the Counties Act Amendment Bill providing for graduated rating oa absentees from the province and from tho Colony. Richard Walsh, one of the sub-bailiffs of the Resident Magistrate’s Court, committed suicide this evening by shooting himsoif in the head with a revolver. The reasons for the rash act are not yet known. NAPIER, Sept. 4.

Tho wool sellers and the proprietors of tho compressed air shearing machine have consented to take part in a trial on a station in the Hawke’s Bay district on a large scale. The trial has, however, been postponed till next season, as there was nob time to arrange tho preliminaries for a trial this year. DUNEDIN, Sept. 4.

The Education Board to-day decided to appoint a truant officer, to act also as drill instructor, salary £l5O a-year. The action was taken because of the truancy rife in town.

At the Police Court, James M'Nair, canvasser for the " Picturesque Atlas,” was fined £5 aud costs £2 for assaulting a subscriber by striking him on tho face.
