NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

[Pub Press association.! WELLINGTON. Sept. 5. A deputation from the New Zealand Eifle Association, consisting of Majors' Sommerville and Donald and Captain ; Griffiths, accompanied by local M.H.B/8, waited on the Defence Minister this evening, for the purpose of ascertaining what assistance might be expected inobtaining and preparing a permanent rifle range in Wellington for the annual gatberinge of the Association, and the use of warships frequenting the Colony. The Defence Minister replied that he was fully of opinion that if a Colonial rifle range was to be established it should be near Wellington, as being most central. He was, however, not in a position to make, any direct promise of pecuniary assistance, owing to such a large amount having to be taken from the Volunteer vote for the purchase; of the Pollhill Gully • range; but as; the question was of importance, he; would bring it before the Cabinet. Thei question of ammunition was raised, and Mir Seddon expressed himself as being willing to do all he could for the Volunteers. Be said he was arranging for a supply, which he believed would be cheaper than the present rate.
