SPORTING.

[Special to Press Association.] [Received August 15, at 12.50 a.m.j SYDNEY, August 14, Helene has been scratched for the Metropolitan Stakes. CANTERBURY TROTTING CLUB. Starter, Mr H. J. Denett; Handicapper, Mr J. Heslop. The attendance at the Canterbury Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday was the largest that has yet been present at a race meeting at Addington, and included many of the visitors from north and south at present in Christchurch. Considering the difficulties under which the officials worked, and the want of proper and convenient accommodation, the management was very creditable. The extended track—it is now thirty-four chains round was to all appearance in first-class order, and judging by the excellent times registered in several events, the going was in reality what it appeared. The trotting was of a superior character, and some of the contests were very interesting. Shamrock had matters pretty well his own way in the Addington Plate, the principal harness event, as he very early in the race established such a lead that his victory was assured. The scratch horse Victor showed he had lost none of his brilliancy, for on settling down he went at a rare pace, and at the finish had run into fourth position. Of the eight that went out for the Pour-mile Harness Trot, H.R.H., with the limit allowance of lOOseo, was made a strong favourite, but backers were doomed to disappointment, as the mare refused to trot. Diplomacy soon established a strong lead, so strong, indeed, that one by one the competitors dropped but of the race. By the time: three miles had been covered all but ; Diplomacy, Black ! Hawk and Kentucky had given up. The lastnamed was trotting in grand form, and as he rapidly overhauled the two in front the excitement became intense. In the last lap Kentucky passed Black Hawk, and rounding the bend for the finish was close on Diplomacy. The latter, however, was just able to struggle home half a length in front of Kentucky. The performance of Kentucky was a really great one, his time for the four miles, lOmin 50sec, considerably lowering the Colonial record for the distance. The horse was cheered again and again on pulling up. It should be mentioned, too, that in the very first round one of the tyres of the sulky drawn by Kentucky came off and effected, if not a considerable, at all events a slight handicap. During the day J 82747 passed through the totalisator, which is a much larger sum than has ever previously been operated on in connection with the Club’s races. The following are details of the various events : MAIDEN STAKES HANDICAP (in saddle), of 20 sots. Two miles. 132 Mr J. Brake’s g m Polly, 6yrs, 34seo (Owner) 1 1-1 Mr T.
