The discussions upon the Labour Bills now before the House of Representatives afford a very good idea of the calibre and judgment of the labour members. These gentlemen must be congratulated. So far they have completely belied, by their moderate tone aud judicious action, the fears of extreme partisanship and revolutionary legislation which, haunted the Conservatives. On the land question and taxation they all have ; convictions which they have made no effort to conceal. Even here, however, they have proved strictly amenable to party discipline, and have loyally abided by the judgment of the Liberal leaders; whilst on all matters relating particularly to the wageearners they have adopted a stand which will greatly strengthen their position in the country. Although endeavouring to secure reasonable and just reforms, they have shown no desire to use their power in a way calculated to harass employers. On the contrary, they have proved that they recognise the responsibilities of their position, and are anxious to do justice to all classes.
