THE GRAND NATIONAL MEETING, More than ordinary interest centres in the New Zealand Grand National meeting, which takes place at Eiccarton to-day. This is perhaps largely due to the fact that there are a considerable number of North Island horses engaged, and the chief contests will most probably resolve themselves into inter-island trials of strength. Everything points to this year’s gathering being a decided success. The weather, which has held fine for so long—altogether too fine for our country friends—gives promise of continuing good; and if the promise is fulfilled, the attendance will probably form a record. The running tracks are in perfect order, and will give the heavily handicapped horses a much better chance than they would have possessed had there been recent rains. The following is the programme of the meeting:— Ipjt.-HUNTERS’ HURDLE RACE, of 50 savs; 10 rova from the stake for second horse; amateur riders allowed 51b. Once round aud a distance. GRAND NATIONAL HURDLE RACE. Regina 1. Kulnine 2. The Idler 3. MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE. Christmas or Freeman. WELTER FLAT RACE. Kimberley. TRAINING NOTES. Eiccakton, Wednesday. Just before the battle it was hardly expected that much fast work would be indulged in, but, nevertheless, several of the horses were fairly extended. Kimberley, going alone, was given strong exercise over about two miles, Mr Ormond’s steeplechaser, Otaieri, doing a rather greater distance at a sound pace, but moving none too freely. Harkaway, looking gay and well, and Isidore finished up a useful gallop at top speed; Isidore was of no use to his companion. Dan and Leonie, the latter going very gingerly, were sent at three-quarter pace twice round. Strong work was meted out to Tauraekaitai over three miles. Couranto went a sound gallop of two miles, finishing strongly. He is the fittest of the North Islanders in the Hurdle Race. Begiaa, after doing a round by herself, was joined by Yon Tempsky, and the pair went a circuit together. The mare seemed too good for the gelding. Regina will strip very pink. Jet d’E-iu, going better than ho has done for some time, was sent long cantering exercise. Ahua was worked alone. He was kept at half speed, but was evidently anxious to increase the pace. Easy exercise was given Sentinel, Clyde, Freeman, Captain Abram, Waitangi. Hill’s pair. Kangaroo and The Druid, the former in great heart, did strong work, the steeplechaser pulling over The Drnid throughout the gallop. Cheshunfc, Lewis, Statesman, Lightning, Launcelot, Begorrah and Glen were given steady work. Norton led Kulnine a good gallop for two circuits, but neither horse was extended. The last of the couple of rounds put in by Lyndoora was at about top speed, the big mare going well. After going steadily for a circuit Waih'i and Christmas were let out for a round, the first-named showing most pace; the Steeplechase candidate went a’third round by himself. Encore did long, strong exercise, and Erin-go-Bragh put in sound work.

Ahiio, Darnley and Tauraekaitai wero last night favourites in the betting for the Grand National Steeplechase, 4 to 1 being offered against each. Freeman was quoted at a point longer, and Sentinel at 6 to 1. For tho Grand National Hurdle Race Kulnine was nominally favourite at 3 to 1, but no better price could be obtained against either Regina or Tho Idler. [Pcs Panns Association.) DUNEDIN, August 12. Nominations wero received to-night by tho D.J.C. for the Champion Coursing Meeting. For the Champion Stakes 14 nominations were made by 11 owners, for the Maiden Stakes 61 nominations by 47

owners, and for the Sapling Stakes St nominations by 26 owners. COURSING. METROPOLITAN PLUMPTON PARK CLUB. Second Day, There was again a very moderate attendance at Plnmptoa Park yesterday. The sport, however, was good, the hares, with very few exceptions, tunning strongly, and finding their way through the escapes with hardly a blunder. The weather was bright, bat a cold easterly wind somewhat interfered with the com* fort of the spectators.
