SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Society for the Prevention of. Cruelty to Animals was held at the City Council Chambers at noon on Friday \ present—Mr C. Louisson (in the chair), Messrs W. Pratt, S. Manning, G. T. Booth and J. H. Parker. The Inspector, Mr A. W. Smith, reported that during July he had visited the suburbs, Sumner and Ashburton, and the markets at Addington and Christchurch. He had given eighteen cautions for cruelty and examined thirty-three horses for wounds. He had visited the seal which was exhibited in a shop in High street oh' July 29. The owner had ordered a tank; to be made for it, and the Inspector considered he had done his utmost under the circumstances to make it comfortable. A discussion arose on the question of worn-out horses, unfit for work, being sold by auction to persons who work them. The Inspector reported on a case of a horse having been bought for 15s, and kept for work instead of being killed. It was decided to write to the auctioneers, requesting them to see that horses unfit for work were sold only to be destroyed; After some routine business the meeting terminated.
