THE SEA SERPENT.

TO THE BDITOK. Sie,— The question as to what time the sun rose off Portland Light on August 1 appears to have exercised the minds of some of your correspondents. With local f.TrriA the eun would rise at 7.5 a.m., due correction being made for refraction and equation of time; but as tho Portland Light is in 178 east longitude, and the New Zealand mean time is calculated for I72deg SOmin, there would have to be 22min deducted, which would make it 6.43 a.m. on that date. It is most probable that the Rotomahaaa would be keeping Now Zealand mean time, ns this is the standard time at all ports in tho Colony.—l am. &c., TIME-BALL.
