FIRE BRIGADE HORSES.
TO THE EDITOE.
g IBj —I am very much surprised at "Eye-Witness’” letter, and think he should study horsee a little before attempting another. The horses referred to are under the care of the head driver of the City Council, who has amply proved his efficiency by from twelve to fifteen years’ service. He hardly ever uses a whip, thus disproving the charge of cruelty. . How does our learned "Eye-Witness ” imagine they manage in London, where the streets are much more crowded, and the speed,'if anything, greater ? The chemical in question carries a bell, which is rung, and has been thoroughly satisfactory for years. The chief test of efficiency with a Brigade is supposed to be the speed with which an engine can be taken to a fire. I think the above facts should be a sufficient refutation of the charges contained in the letter. It is a pity your correspondent has thought fit to shield himself under a nom de flume. He should pay a visit to the Chester street station, and watch the affection the horses have for our driver, obeying even the smallest, word. I may add that he has the selection of horses for fire purposes, and that the lieutenant and myself were on the engine at the time referred to. The speed was strictly usual, and the whip was not even taken from its socket. In conclusion, the animals are thoroughly trained, and know their work as well as the men, I am equally anxious as "Eye-Witness’’ to have the inquiry he speaks of held, and should like to have the charges cleared up. —I am, &c., GEO. WINSTONE, Senior Foreman (In charge of the Pioneer Chemical Co.).
