MINING NEWS.

[PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

REEFTON. May 30.

The following is the Stock Exchange report The battery returns to hand up to the present snake a total of 2045 m of amalgam, contributed by the Big Kivor, Progress, Globe, Keep-it-Dark No. 2, Keep-it-Dark and Cumberland. Those of the Fiery Cross and Alpine are hourly expected. There are heavy yields from the Cumberland, and the Big River returns are exceptionally good, and must go a long way to still further establish the high grade of quartz now being mined in the Inangahua district. Crushing at the Hercules is likely to be resumed next week, and at the Golden Lead battery works operations are so well advanced as to justify the expectation of the stampers being put in motion, for the first time in this new locality, within, say, the next three weeks. At the Venus mine stone is being taken out preparatory to crushing. The share market has been moderately brisk daring the week, and transactions have been fairly well distributed over a number of lines representing pretty well every part of the field, with very fair rises in value in several. Buyers of Alexandras still offer low rates, and Big Rivers are firm at a slight improvement on former Quotations, a condition certainly weii justified by the high average being maintained at the battery. The complete cleaning up takes place on Saturday next. Blue Skies have not changed hands much, hut the ground cannot fail to attract notice. Cumberlands saw business more advanced rates, and touched 14s Sd, the highest figure for these shares yet. Excellent stone is being sent to tho mill. The quantity reduced this week is rather less than usual, some interferenee with the dam having rendered a temporary stoppage necessary in the earlier part of the week. Durhams have been dealt in up to Is, and Dudleys are quoted at a modest figure. Exchanges, with nothing new reported, keep firmer at about former rates. Fiery Crosses are quoted at from 8s to 8s 3d, and the return, which is not yet to hand, is sure to be a handsome one, and leave ample margin for a substantial dividend, which may also be said of the Cumberland. Golden Treasures are a shade easier, and Golden Leads have advanced to, and sold at, 7s 9d. Crushing starts soon v/itli tho latter mice. Low rates offer for Gallants, and Globes remain at a stationary position, with an early improvement expected. Happy Valleys had business in good-sized parcels at the usual price, something handy to sixpence. Sellers of Hercules aok 2s lid to-day, and the crushing will do much to bring the shares into better notice. In the Inkemann mine lower workings good progress towards getting the cross-cut for tho reef started is being made. The Dark yield is better than usual, hut the complete cleaning up did nob take place to-day. Lord Edwards ranged from. 2s 6d to 2s 9d all the week, with limited business, but the general appearance of matters out Big River way should lead to some investment in well-situated ground like this. Buyers of Merrijigs remain unsupplied at the prices offering, and shares are being looked for. No. 2 Keep-it-Darks sold at 5s 4d. The complete cleaning up was. not made to-day, and good accounts continue from the mine. Pandoras are under slight notice, and sellers of Success shares ask an advance. Scotias sold at lOd, and are firm at that 5 and Russells were offered to-day at Is 4d. Buyers and sellers of Drakes keep apart, but the resumption of active work on stone may lead to business directly. Interests in the Tyne lease are wanted. The positions of the Alpine, Wealth and Welcome in the share market remain unchanged, with the likelihood of fresh developments causing inquiry at any moment.
