KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held on Tuesday night. There were present— The Mayor (Mr C. Hansen) and Councillors Weston, Doubleday, Blakeley, Stanton, Butts, Brighting, Bugg and Liseaman. correspondence. Letters were read : Prom the Eyreton Road Board. Prom Mr Henderson, re drain in Sowell street. Prom Mr M. Nalder, asking that,, the sump near his residence should be cleaned out, and provision made for the tide to flow in and out. Prom the Fire Brigade, applying for long-service medals for two members. Prom Messrs Tourell and Winterbourne, re drain at Mandeville Hotel. Prom the Railway Commissioners, re water supply for fire purposes at railway station. It was resolved that Mr Nalder’s letter be acknowledged,' and the Pire Prevention Committee be asked to look into the matter. The Pire Brigade’s request was granted; Messrs Tourell and Winterbourne’S: letter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. Ee Henderson’s letter, the Clerk was instructed to ascertain if the other property holders in the vicinity were willing to contribute their share of expense of the proposed drain. Some twenty letters from burgesses, asking to have their names placed on the burgess roll, were referred to the Finance Committee with power to act. surveyor’s report. • _ The Surveyor reported that the Eeswick street drain was choked up with willows, which should be cut. John Barnes, caretaker of the public cemetery,, had left. The town clock needed repairing. Storer had completed his contract, and he would recommend that his deposit of £lO be refunded to him. The shingle contractor was well forward with his contract, and should be paid .£3 of his deposit. Councillor Butt moved, and Councillor Blakeley seconded—" That the town clock be not repaired until it was ascertained whether the building' in which it was placed was likely to remain.” Carried. Councillor Lisaaman moved, and Councillor Butt seconded—" Thatthe position of town scavenger be referred to the Sanitary Committee to prepare a schedule of duties, and to invite tenders for same, to be in by next meeting.” The Surveyor’s report was then adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. Councillor Blakeley reported the receipts for the past fortnight to he £lO6 6s 6d; general account debit balance, £4Si 153 4d; loan account credit balance, £lB2 2e; and recommended accounts for payment amounting to £36 9;. The Clerk reported on the very unsatisfactory way in which the late sexton managed , the Cemetery affairs. Several leaves were missing out of his records, and the grounds were in bad order. Councillor Butt moved and Councillor Brigbting seconded—" That Mr Mansfield be written to re bis Cemetery plot, and an explanation be given him.” The Mayor read a new schedule of sexton's duties, which was approved of. Two applications for the position -of sexton were opened, and that of Mr A. L. Thompson was accepted. It was resolved that the town bell be rung on Sundays at 10 a.m. As the next regular meeting of the Council falls on a holiday, it was resolved to hold the same on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The meeting then terminated. The Councillors present afterwards agreed to ask Councillor Doubleday to allow himself to be nominated for the position' of Mayor for the ensuing year, pledging themselves to support him in case of an election. Councillor thanked them for the hononr done him, and expressed hie willingness to accept the position. ________________
