FIRES.

WELLINGTON, June 19. By a fire at Eketahuna Thompson’s livery stables were destroyed. The fire also burned a portion of Parson’s Hotel. The former was uninsured; the latter was insured for £IOOO. Both owners are heavy WANGANUI, June 16. A fire broke out in the Avenue on Sunday morning at four o’clock, destroying the block of buildings occupied by Messrs G. D. Jones (tailor), Johnson and Co., of Wellington (merchants), and Beale and Co. (sewing machine depot.) The fire originated in Mr Jones’ workroom, and the brigade had some difficulty in confining it to the three shops. Mr Moult’s crockery warehouse, adjoining, caught fire, but was extinguished before much damage was done. The insurances are; Jones, £4OO, New Zealand, on the stock; Johnson and Co., £350, National, on the stock; Beale and Co., £2OO, Standard, on the stock. The buildings burnt were insured for £250 each, the National having £SOO and the London and Lancashire £250. Mr Goldshury, the manager for Beale and Co., escaped with nothing but what he stood in, and loses all the clothing and effects of himself and family. Mr Moult has £IOOO each in the South British and Phoenix on the stock, and the buildings are insured for £350. NELSON, June 12. The Evening Mail’s Collingwood correspondent telegraphs that Gledhill’s Commercial ■ Hotel was burnt last night. Insurance, £I2OO, in the Norwich Union. INVERCARGILL, July 3. The Railway Hotel, Wyndham, occupied hy Mr John Monaghan, was burned down at three o’clock this morning. Very little was saved, the inmates escaping with scant clothing. The building was insured for £550, and the stock and furniture for £250, both in the New Zealand office; with reinsurances in the North Gorman and Colonial amounting to £525, The cause of the fire was a defective chimney.
