SCIENTISTS' ASSOCIATION.

- A meeting of the' Committee bf the' Canterbury Branch of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science was held in the Christchurch Public Library, at 4 p.m., yesterday. Present— The Mayor of Christchurch (Chairman), Professor Hutton (Hon Secretary), and Messrs M. Moseley, M. Murphy, C. C. Bowen, R. J. Scott, P. Strouts, John Meeson, F. Tendall, Charlewood, E. Dobson, Leonard Harper, H. R. Webb, Naylor Beckett, A. C. Gifford, Georgs Gray, E. M. Laing, Rev T. Flaveli, and Drs Thomas and Jennings. A letter was read from Mr Justice Denniston, stating that, owing to press of business, he had overlooked the previous meeting of the Association. Messrs John H. Baker and P. Strouts wrote, expressing their willingness to be elected on the Committee of the Association, and sympathy with its aims. On the motion of Mr C. C. Bowen, seconded by Dr Thomas, those three gentlemen were elected to the Committee of the Association. The Chairman explained the necessity of electing three Committees to carry out the proposed arrangements of the Association for the coming annual meeting, to be held in Christchurch in January next. It might be said that they were commencing work too early, but he thought it advisable to get the Association established on a firm basis, and gain the confidence of scientists in the other centres of the Colony. Another reason for immediate action, urged by the speaker, was that it was his holiday time now, and he could give all his attention to the necessary work. The meeting then elected the following Sub-Committees, with power to add to their number:—Reception Committee— Messrs W. J. Guise Brittain, John Meeson, and W. H. Wynn-Williams ; Excursion Committee—Messrs E. Dobson, R. J. Scott, and John E. Baker; Entertainment Committee Captain Garaia, Mr Leonard Harper, and Professor Haalam. It was determined that one SubCommittee should meet each week in rotation, on Wednesdays, at 4 p.m., commencing on Wednesday week with the Reception Committee. Mr and Mrs Reginald Corbett wore elected members of the Association: The Chairman stated that Lord Onslow would attend, if possible, to open, the annual meeting in January, if the date did not clash with the Native meeting proposed to be held on Jan. 13. He furtherstated that a list of the Australian members who had promised to attend was on the table, and requested those who knew of others who had intimated their intention of attending the meeting, to keep the list posted up to date.
